FAQ
A detoxifying shampoo helps remove all the build-up: excess oils, hard water minerals, product buildup, and daily dirt. It does this without aggressively stripping back your hair and adds nourishing hydrating to your hair and scalp.
They both remove unwanted build-up and impurities. The key distinction is the ingredients they use to do this and how those ingredients interact with your hair and scalp. Detoxifying shampoos, like our Sandalwood Yuzu Shampoo, rely on plant-based, nontoxic ingredients to gently but thoroughly cleanse your hair while supporting your scalp. Clarifying products rely on effective yet harsh chemical-based ingredients to strip away build-up without adding any moisture back into the hair. They can be disruptive to your scalp’s microbiome and health and are commonly recommended for occasional use. A gentle detoxifying shampoo is appropriate for frequent use.
The formulation and ingredients used in our Sandalwood Yuzu Shampoo give a very deep yet gentle clean to remove a lot of unwanted build-up and excess oils from your hair and scalp. This cleansing unburdens your hair from all that weight, giving you more definition, and more volume. That’s one part of it, the deep cleansing. The other part is the nourishing this formula offers. It helps restore balance and hydration. When we are too harsh with our hair, using harsh ingredients that momentarily give us results, our scalp retaliates but produces more oil to help repair any damage or balance itself. By using a nontoxic formula, your scalp will start to find a wonderful homeostasis and can produce fewer oils since frequent repair isn’t necessary.
A few variables beyond what’s in the bottle impact the frequency of washes: how you wash your hair and what else is a part of your haircare routine. When you go to the salon, they dig their fingers and massage your scalp – increasing blood flow and helping cleanse out build-up. Try to mimic this at home for better results! The other component is your routine: are you using products that contain silicones, for example? This adds a lot of shine but also coats the strands of your hair and builds up over time, requiring more frequent washing. If your goal is to have a healthier scalp and head of hair and to reduce how frequently you need to wash it to support your holistic hair health, then evaluating your routine and products outside of shampoo and conditioner is recommended.
We recommend 2-3x per week, but ultimately, you know your hair: we encourage you to find a routine that works for you. While it’s important to thoroughly wash your hair and scalp, frequent washing can be counter-effective. Our Sandalwood Yuzu Shampoo was formulated to give you more time between washes. You can also still condition on days you are showering without.
