Timeless Tablescapes

Farmer-Florist Hannah Muller has a breathtaking capability of creating a welcoming setting using flowers. Hers is a field-to-vase approach, using local flowers and produce to create unique and wild garden style arrangements that stand the test of time. Her new book ‘Designing with Dried Flowers” delves into her unique flower drying methods and artfully composed floral arrangements that can be made all year round.

Here are her tips for creating a welcoming tablescape that invites guests to linger:

  • In the warmer months, my rule of thumb is to let a tablescape shine with only a few fresh ingredients that let the season really speak for itself. I find that keeping the tablescape warm, welcoming and dripping with olive oil and edible decorations is the best way to keep community and family at the table long after the meal is done
  • For a dried tablescape my favorite simple design is to use ceramic bud vases with a colorful array of focal flowers, filler flowers and grasses.
  • I place a few stems in each vase at a variety of heights to keep the eye wandering throughout the arrangements. For a pop of blue I added one of my favorite dried flowers- echinops.
  • If you have extra dried flowers after you’ve finished your arrangements, you can always make mini bouquets to place at each table setting as a sweet gift for your friends to take home.
  • Any dried flowers that may have broken during the arranging can be sprinkled on the table as flower confetti.

Hannah Muller is a farmer, florist and author from Northern California. Over the last decade, she has helped to pioneer the Field-To-Vase and Slow Flower movements, reminding supporters of local organic farming to not only eat local produce but to enjoy locally grown flowers as well. For these bud vases I used strawflower, nigella, larkspur, poppy pods, quaking oat grass, marigolds and ammobium.
